Liverpool Bay, Irish Sea Models (POL Coastal Observatory)

The POL coastal observatory modelling suite.

Domain

Irish Sea, Liverpool Bay

PHYSICS

Calculation Code

POLCOMS

Output frequency

Hourly

Horizontal grid

- Irish Sea: 1.8km;

- Liverpool Bay: 200m

Vertical grid

- 34 Irish sea,

- 20 LB s-coordinate vertical levels

Bathymetry

NOOS

Surface Forcings

- 3-hourly cloud cover, 10m wind, air temperature, specific humidity and precipitation from North Atlantic European atmos. Met Office NWP model.

- Surface forcing bulk formulae will be changed to use the COARE v3 parameterization.

Boundary Conditions

- Temperature, salinity, residual currents and SSH from the Met Office MRCS POLCOMS-ERSEM.

- include data from real-time river flows as available.

- (consider) using the climatological inherent optical properties (IOP) derived from SeaWifs to improve penetration of short wave radiation.

Lateral Friction

No slip

Bottom Friction

quadratic ‘law of the wall’

Horizontal Diffusion for the Dynamics/Tracers

Smagorinsky

Advection scheme

Piecewise parabolic method

Vertical Mixing

Turbulence model updated from the GOTM framework (k-e).

Tide

Yes

BIOLOGY

Calculation Code

ERSEM will be added to the IRS model.

State Variables

100 state variables, including: - 4 phytoplankton groups,

- 3 zooplankton groups,

- pelagic bacteria,

- 5 benthic organisms,

- 2 benthic decomposers,

- 2 DOM groups,

- 3 POM groups,

- 5 nutrients,

- oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Processes

Simulation of both pelagic and benthic nutrient-phytoplankton-zooplankton-decomposer dynamics using carbon as its basic unit of currency although the cycling of oxygen and the nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorous and silicate are also calculated.

Light Formulation

SPM model described by Holt & James (1999) or SeaWiFs derived IOPs

Boundary Conditions

Mean annual cycle of the AMM model run with POLCOMS-ERSEM.
